چکیده

One of the key research interests in the area of Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP) is to identify tractable classes of constraints and develop efficient solutions for them. In this paper, we introduce generalized staircase (GS) constraints which is an important generalization of one such tractable class found in the literature, namely, staircase constraints. GS constraints are of two kinds, down staircase (DS) and up staircase (US). We first examine several properties of GS constraints, and then show that arc consistency is sufficient to determine a solution to a CSP over DS constraints. Further, we propose an optimal O(cd) time and space algorithm to compute arc consistency for GS constraints where c is the number of constraints and d is the size of the largest domain. Next, observing that arc consistency is not necessary for solving a DSCSP, we propose a more efficient algorithm for solving it. With regard to US constraints, arc consistency is not known to be sufficient to determine a solution, and therefore, methods such as path consistency or variable elimination are required. Since arc consistency acts as a subroutine for these existing methods, replacing it by our optimal O(cd) arc consistency algorithm produces a more efficient method for solving a USCSP.

Fuzzy Temporal Constraint Networks for Clinical Information

Modeling the temporal information in the medical record is an important area of research. This paper describes an extension of TimeText, a temporal reasoning system designed to represent, extract, and reason about temporal information in clinical text, to include the use of fuzzy temporal constraints. The addition of fuzzy temporal constraints increases TimeTexts ability to handle uncertainty i...

A Generalized Algorithm for Solving Constraint Hierarchies1

Constraint hierarchies have been proposed to overcome over-constrained systems of constraints by specifying constraints with hierarchical preferences. They are widely used in HCLP (Hierarchical Constraint Logic Programming), CIP (Constraint Imperative Programming) and graphical user interfaces. The advantages of constraint hierarchies are a declarative expression of preferred constraints and th...

Soft Constraints at Interfaces

Assuming that grammar is best modeled as a set of modules each representing a constraint system, like other human cognitive faculties, these constraint systems are bound to disagree and soft constraints are needed for conflict resolution among modules. This paper outlines an approach to incorporate soft constraints among grammar modules. The paper first goes over the issue of modularity and con...

Generalized Local Propagation: A Framework for Solving Constraint Hierarchies

`Constraint hierarchy' is a nonmonotonic system that allows programmers to describe over-constrained real-world problems by specifying constraints with hierarchical preferences, and has been applied to various areas. An important aspect of constraint hierarchies is the existence of e cient satisfaction algorithms based on local propagation. However, past local-propagation algorithms have been l...

Global Constraints in Distributed Constraint Satisfaction and Optimization

Global constraints are an essential component in the efficiency of centralized constraint programming. We propose to include global constraints in distributed constraint satisfaction and optimization problems (DisCSPs and DCOPs). We detail how this inclusion can be done, considering different representations for global constraints (direct, nested, binary). We explore the relation of global cons...
